Mid-Week Coffee Date

Hi friends. Happy August! I'm happy to see July behind me. Last month was brutal. I took on some extra projects at work and with my ever-growing pre-baby to-do list, just felt like I didn't have time for anything. It doesn't help that I'm super unmotivated to do much of anything these days. I blame pregnancy, but I'm pushing through. I haven't had the chance to post since my big announcement so I thought I'd ease back in with a coffee date and fill you in on what I've been up to!

If we were having coffee, I would be drinking Mommee Coffee. I found this stuff on Amazon and love it. I'm not a coffee snob but this is really tasty coffee! It's low acid, quarter caf coffee (also comes in half-caf and 3/4-caf) which is perfect for a soon-to-be mama who is limiting her caffeine intake but can't drink regular coffee because pregnancy heartburn is real.

If we were having coffee, here's what I'd share:

I'm officially in my 3rd trimester! I shared a little bit about our experience going through pregnancy loss in my last post so this feels like a huge milestone. I'm feeling surprisingly good at this point, if not a little run down but everything is looking good.

I have a mile-long to-do list of stuff I want to get done around the house before the baby comes and surprisingly, most of it has nothing to do with the baby. The list is things like...painting the laundry room, reorganizing the pantry, and hanging our bedroom curtains. It feels a little overwhelming and I wish I could take a week off to just work on house projects but unfortunately, I need to save that time for maternity leave.

I miss running. I haven't run a single mile in 2018 and I was fine with it until very recently. I always wanted to be someone who ran through my pregnancy but with my history, honestly, I was just too scared to run. I lived in a bubble my first trimester and I know that that's what I needed to do for my own well-being. I didn't feel well enough to even attempt to run until I was close to 20 weeks and by that point, I had a sizeable baby bump that I wasn't used to running with and I didn't like running the few times I tried to get out there. I hope that my return to running isn't impossible after being out of the game for a full year but I have every intention of running again as soon as I feel up to it and am cleared by my doctor!

I've finally gotten out of the reading rut I've been in all year. I'm 11 books behind on my Goodreads challenge (which I had actually set low this year) but I'm finally back to reading every day. Everyone keeps telling me I'll have tons of time to read on maternity leave so maybe I'll be able to catch up. Right now, I'm reading "Paris to the Moon" by Adam Gopnik, a New Yorker writer who moved to Paris with his 8-month-old son in the 90s. Let me tell you - if this doesn't set my wannabe expat wheels turning, I don't know what does!

I'm working on my recap of our amazing trip to Lisbon and will have those posts up next week! But I can tell you right now, Lisbon was an amazing choice for a babymoon...for a lot of unexpected reasons!

To all of you who commented on my post, thank you, I'll be responding soon now that I'm out of a busy July!

What would you share over coffee?
What's your coffee shop drink of choice?

Coffee Date: April( (in Hawaii!) Edition

Aloha from Hawaii!

Remember me? I started off the year with a bold determination to get back into blogging...and then I let two months go without even trying to write a blog post. It makes me sad because I really do love this space and it's been hard to make it a priority for a long time now.

I wish I could say that this time, I've been away for a good reason - that I have so much to catch up on from all of the wonderful trips I've taken and fabulous things I've done over the last few months, but the truth is, I've been working a lot and I haven't really wanted to leave my house much because this winter has just been brutal.

But I'm exhausted. Until now, I hadn't taken a vacation in 5 months and this endless winter has just really worn me down. So a few weeks ago, I called up my good friend, Carolann, and asked her if I could come visit her in Hawaii, and I came as soon as I could.

Carolann asked me what I wanted to do when I got here and I told her, "absolutely nothing." We've done more than that but there has been a lot of down time and sitting on the beach, which is exactly what I needed. I feel immensely better. I was supposed to get home yesterday but one downside to the perk of being able to travel whenever and wherever is the risk of not getting a seat as a standby passenger. Getting out of Hawaii right now is proving a little bit difficult, so I'm working some immensely early mornings from here until I can get back home.

Since it's been so long, let's catch up (over a steaming mug of Hawaiian blend with condensed milk, if you want to match my Aloha spirit!).

I turned 31 in February...and said good riddance to 30, the hardest and worst year of my life. The Pilot and I celebrated both of our birthdays, which are 1 week apart, with a road trip to Charlottesville, VA.

I haven't run a single mile in 2018... and its (mostly) been by choice, though the endless winter we're having hasn't made me miss running and I had a few doctors suggest that cutting back on running might be good for me. This isn't by any means a permanent thing and I think I'm going to start running again this month, easing back into it if (and only if) the weather cooperates. I'm over this 40-degree nonsense and I won't run in it in April.

I haven't been reading much lately... unless you count all of the reading I've been doing for work on education systems in West Africa and our current government's practical guarantee of another financial crisis. I haven't just skipped mine and Carolann's monthly link up because I haven't been blogging, I haven't been reading either. It took me almost the entire month to read the last book I read and I've been suffering through a horrendous nonfiction audiobook for 2 months that I can't seem to quit. I didn't even bring any books to Hawaii but luckily, Carolann has plenty for me to borrow!

The Pilot and I are planning our next trip to Paris. We've gone to Paris every other year since 2012, merely by coincidence but on our third trip there in 2016, we decided to make it a routine. We want to add on to the trip either with some time om the south of France, or going back to Portugal, or seeing somewhere totally new. I have my heart set on Budapest but we'll see.

I really miss living in DC. The Pilot and I both do. I fully expected this. Neither one of us ever really wanted to leave DC but the city's housing market is pretty inaccessible. I'm glad I still commute to the city a few days a week but I miss living there. I like Baltimore enough but DC is home. I have zero regrets about buying our home or moving to Baltimore and I hope I come to love Baltimore in its own way but I think I'll always miss DC. It's the first city I've lived in after London that I ever truly loved living in.

I wish I had more to say about what I've been up to these last few months but to be honest, I really don't. The Pilot has been flying a lot and I've been working a lot. I really hate cold weather so outside of going to work and walking Peyton, I've spent most of my time hibernating and getting settled into our house, but Hawaii has been so good for me and I'm excited to get home to (hopefully) warmer weather and head into spring with a new perspective!

What have I missed in the blog world lately?
Have you taken any vacations lately? Planning any exciting trips?

Life Lately.

Hi. (Waves sheepishly.) Remember me?

I can't believe it has been six weeks since I last posted.

Ever since I started my current job last year, I've had less time for this blog. Most days, I sit at my computer and write. My work is thought-provoking, engaging, challenging, and incredibly demanding. I thought, at first, that I would enjoy switching gears before or after work to write about things that are fun but the reality is that by the time I shut down for the day, I just can't bring myself to sit in front of a computer and keep writing. It doesn't help that I work from home most days so I don't even have that period of commuting to unwind and give myself a break. On days that I am in the office, my bus commute takes anywhere from 45 minutes to 90 depending on the traffic and I'm usually pretty exhausted by the time I get home.

DC buses feel like some sort of punishment loop. Seriously.

This time around, work hasn't been the sole reason I've stayed away from my blog and reading all of yours. This year has been hard. I usually roll my eyes at the people who always say, "I can't believe it's already September" but this time, I feel like September has rolled around and I can't catch a break. I can't believe it's already September and that for the last four months, I feel like I've been spiraling downward. I know, I'm being really vague and I'm sorry. I really am. One day, I definitely plan to share what's been going on but right now, I'm too busy trying to keep my head on straight to open up about everything.

Since it has been so long and summer is coming to a close, I'll share a few details of what I have been up to:
  • The Pilot and I went to Dublin. It was a wildly impromptu trip but The Pilot whisked me away to the land of Guinness and stew. I was desperate to get away somewhere and that trip was just what I needed. I could use another weekend like that right about now.
  • I went to a wedding in San Francisco with one of my girlfriends. I also took my first trip to wine country.
  • The Pilot and I went to Croatia and got stuck in Munich on the way there. Croatia wasn't what I expected. I'm hoping to get those posts up in the next week or two so you can see why.
While it may all sound like fun and travel, I can assure you that it hasn't been. Every single one of those trips was taken because I desperately needed to get away and take my mind off of things. They definitely served their purpose but now I'm dealing with some other things that have popped up since Croatia and I could use another trip. Running away has always been my favorite solution. It gives me a chance to reset, refocus, and feel better.
  • I can probably count on both hands the number of times I've gone for a run since April. Remember when I went to Dubai for 4 days and ran 3 out of the 4? Yea. I miss that kind of commitment and I'm desperate to get back to it. It's amazing how hard it is to get back into running when I haven't run in so long. I planned to run just 2 miles four times this past week and I only did that once. I've got a long road ahead of me if I'm struggling to find time for two miles.
  • I've read 25 books this year, a decent number but I think I've only liked 3 of them.
  • My house is a mess. I haven't even unpacked from our trip to Croatia. We've been back for two months. I wish I was joking.
I'm desperate to get back to a place of prioritizing the things that make me happy - running, blogging, and traveling (and blogging about traveling). I need to start doing these things for my own peace of mind and well-being. This year has been absolute hell for me and I feel like I haven't had anything to fall back on so it's been a lot harder than I think it could have been if I was able to have time for the things that make me happy. We do have a few exciting things looming:
  • Two of my friends are getting married this month so wedding season has officially kicked off in our household.
  • Wednesday is our 3rd wedding anniversary and, while we normally jet off somewhere fun to celebrate (see last year's trip to Australia and the previous year's trip to Hawaii), we took our anniversary trip early this year (Croatia) because of The Pilot's schedule. That doesn't mean that either of us isn't itching to jet off somewhere this week but sadly, we'll be spending our anniversary apart this year.
Right now at work, I'm in the midst of planning for the next quarter of the year and I feel like it's a good time to plan out the quarter for myself too. What do I want the end of this year to look like? I want to run another half-marathon and possibly start training for a full. We'll see about that though. I want to get back to writing regularly. I desperately want to get back to writing regularly. I'll be taking the next few weeks to make some changes to my blog and share some thoughts about what you can see moving forward. And yes, I'll definitely get those Croatia posts up!

Thanks for reading. For those of you who have reached out because you've noticed my absence, it means the world to me. I spent some time catching up on all of your blogs this weekend but I'd love to hear what everyone has been up to.

Do you have any fun plans for fall?
What books have you absolutely loved lately? I'm desperate for a good read!

Coffee Date: April Edition

Good Morning! Happy Monday! I hope you're enjoying a strong cup of coffee after a fabulous weekend and that spring has fully sprung wherever you are. Here in DC, it's been pretty cold and rainy but the temperatures are supposed to climb into the 80s later this week and I couldn't be happier!

This morning, I'm skipping coffee in favor of this Can't Beet Me Smoothie from the Run Fast, Eat Slow cookbook. I have always hated beets but I decided to give this smoothie a try and it's surprisingly good!

Let's catch up.

If we were having coffee... I would start with a confession and tell you that I desperately miss my blog. I really hate that I've been so inconsistent in the last year despite promising to myself month after month that this month, I would bring it back.

The reality is that I spend my entire work week writing and the absolutely last thing I want to do when I finish work at the end of every day, or even during the weekends, is to keep writing. We just had performance reviews at work and one of the things we were meant to talk about is personal goals and I desperately want to make it a personal goal to bring my blog back and take it in the direction that I really want to but truthfully, I just don't know how.

I would also tell you that I'm in a reading rut this month. I've started two books that I just haven't been able to get into and have left on my bedside table less than 50 pages in. The sad thing is that both are books that I've had on my reading list for awhile. I confess I haven't started the book for Carolann's and my book club yet, but I'm planning to start it tomorrow on my way to work. If you're late to joining this month, you've got four days until we link up! This month's pick is "I Let You Go" by Clare Mackintosh.

If we were having coffee... I would tell you that I ran a 10-mile race yesterday! I'm hoping to recap it soon but I ran the GW Parkway Classic, a beautiful race that starts at George Washington's Mount Vernon and ends in Old Town Alexandria, running along the Potomac on the tree-lined GW Parkway the entire race. The concrete was hard on my knees but I had so much fun at this race.

This race was a little bit of a wake-up call for me. I don't know that I'm in shape for the 26.2 I have planned for next month. My training hasn't really been going well and I had to cut last week's 18-miler after I got a really weird bout of vertigo 2 miles into my run. Since I had the race planned for this weekend, I knew I wasn't going to get in 20. I'm still not too sure what I'm going to do but right now I'm ok with either decision. I think I may have jumped into training a little bit too soon after Philly and the idea of running a full marathon in May and then starting training for another one in July seems like a little much right now.

If we were having coffee... I would tell you that my to-do list this week is a mile long but that I need to get through everything. From reading this month's Book Club book to a serious case of spring cleaning, I really need to get on top of things before May rolls around and summer travel starts to pick up.

Lastly, I would tell you that the 5k I'm organizing is this weekend! My goal this week is to sign up 5 new runners and there's a virtual option if you aren't in DC! I've mentioned this before but since September, I've been volunteering with an awesome organization called Bright Beginnings, a child development center for homeless children in DC. Bright Beginnings is a really incredible place that not only supports kids educationally but also helps their families in order to transition them out of homelessness. This weekend is Bright Beginning's biggest fundraiser and I'm so happy to be part of it! Registration is $30 and there's a virtual race option if you aren't in DC! If you sign up, mention that you heard about it from me and let me know! It would make my week!

So that's what's going on in my world. What's going on in yours?
I'm hoping to get a few more posts up this week. We'll see!
For those of you who have stuck around, thank you. It means the world!

Coffee Date: March Edition

Good Morning! Happy Monday! Let's have some coffee and dish about our weekends, shall we?

If we were having coffee, I would be drinking a home brewed cup of Philz Tesora which I splurged on over the weekend following a desperate necessity for coffee. I normally buy my coffee at World Market (their French Roast is delicious) but this was a coffee emergency and I went for the closest thing I could!

I would be much more interested in hearing about your weekend because mine wasn't at all that interesting. I spent the weekend on the couch, only leaving the couch to run but I did run a lot! 22 miles between Friday and Sunday actually and today, I rest!

If we were having coffee, I wold tell you that I'm super excited to be on the Junior League committee organizing a 5k this spring! Since September, I've been volunteering with an awesome organization called Bright Beginnings, a child development center for homeless children in DC. Bright Beginnings supports infants through Kindergarten and is a really incredible place that not only supports kids educationally but also helps their families in order to transition them out of homelessness.

If you're in the DC area, I would love if you signed up! Registration is only $25 and the proceeds go to an amazing cause! And, if you aren't in DC, you should sign up anyway and support Bright Beginnings. If you do sign up, you can indicate that you learned about it from me (Christy or type in Planes, Trains, and Running Shoes).

Speaking of races, I'm really torn between wanting to run a 10-miler or a half in April, at the halfway mark of my training. There don't seem to be many local races that would give me that option and I don't really want to have to travel for a race given all of the expenses that that would entail. I always like to run a half during a marathon training cycle and haven't done that for my last two marathons which has led me to be a little bit edgier and nervous on race morning than I would like. I am running a 10k in May, a distance I've always struggled with (and have avoided for the last five years) which might help with my nerves!

This week will be pretty busy. I have a work event, a Junior League meeting, and book club so I'm going to have some early mornings to get all of my training in but if I could do it balancing two long haul flights the last two weeks, I think I'll manage!

In the words of an old proverb (or Instagram post I saw somewhere), may your Monday be short and your coffee be strong!

What are you drinking this morning?
Do you have fun plans this week?

Coffee Date: November Edition

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I ended up in a food coma from way too many side dishes, but it was well worth it.

I'm starting my morning with a strong cup of coffee and an omelet with sweet potatoes and kale (which I roasted and sauteed for dinner last night). I've got a busy week ahead, and an even busier month, and I'm going to need all the sustenance I can get!

If you were joining me for this coffee date, here's what I'd fill you in on.

I went to the new National Museum of African American History and Culture on Thanksgiving Day with my mom and The Pilot. We got really lucky and were able to walk in without standing in line. I actually booked tickets about three months ago for this Thursday but my mom really wanted to try to get in, so I was able to give my tickets to some friends.

The Museum is spectacular and easily ties the Newseum as my favorite museum in DC. The exhibits were harrowing, emotional, and evocative, and I can't wait to go back and really spend a full day exploring, rather than a few hours.

I haven't run since the marathon. I ran a strong race in Philly and my legs were numb almost from the start. My knees and hips have been really achy ever since, so I decided to take the full week off. Today, I'm planning on using the elliptical or bike, doing some gentle cross training and yoga, and see how I feel. I'm not planning to start running for a few more days. I can't take too much time off because training for the Disney Princess Half starts later this month and I'm setting a bold goal to break my 3-year-old PR and try to go sub-1:50.

I am totally buying my race photos this time around because they are awesome.
Speaking of running, I'm determined to do a lot more of it next year. I'm already signed up for Disney and planning to run DC Rock 'n' Roll. I've got a spring 26.2 that I'm very, very seriously considering and I'd like to do the Pacers 5k Fridays series to try to break my 5k PR. If Philly taught me one thing, it's that I desperately miss racing. I haven't run a race distance less than 10 miles since 2013 and I really want to change that.

I watched the Gilmore Girls revival this weekend. (No spoilers, don't worry.). After binge watching the entire series for the first time from May through July, I was interested to see what the revival would entail. Honestly, I was pretty bored for most of the series and felt like they tried way too hard to fill the space of 90 minutes for each episode. I enjoyed the end but think the rest of the series fell flat.

On Friday, Carolann and I were supposed to host our book club link up. I had planned to say that we would postpone the link up until this coming Friday because of the holiday, but I guess I forgot! Carolann posted her review today, which you can read here, but I'm still working my way through the book and will get it up this week! If you're also still working through "The Pearl that Broke Its Shell," you've got time, the link up will be open through Monday.

The Pilot and I are hoping to head out on one last getaway before the year is over...which means, I really need to finish posting about our trip to Australia!

What would you tell me over coffee? How was your Thanksgiving? Is your Christmass tree up yet? What are you looking forward to through the rest of the year?

Coffee Date: August Edition

It has been an exhausting month.

We moved into our new apartment on July 30th. I didn't take any time off from work and getting settled in was pretty tough. My mom came down the following weekend to help us get settled in, and, while she was a huge help and our apartment is starting to look great, we still have 5 boxes that are unpacked and it still takes me 30 minutes to piece together an outfit in the morning.

I left for Seattle on August 10th and, because of major storms and cancellations, ended up leaving my Air B&B in Vancouver at 5am Sunday, missing 3 flights, flying to Houston, missing a flight, flying to Dallas, booking a hotel room for 4 hours, and waking up Monday morning to fly back to DC on a 6am flight. I landed, headed home to take a shower and hopped in an uber to the office just in time for a 12:00 meeting.

Last week was a quick week and on Friday afternoon, Peyton and I were in the car driving up to NJ for the weekend. I originally wasn't planning to leave until Saturday afternoon but my mom promised to take me to the beach on Saturday, and that was enticing enough. Saturday's Beach Day was glorious. It had been ages since my last trip and it was exactly what I needed.

Sunday, we went to our nephew's Christening and, after all of our flight options for the night got canceled, we hopped in the car and got back to DC just before midnight.

Today is supposed to be my first day of marathon training. I wanted to take the week after Sea Wheeze off to recover, especially since. I had some post-run knee pain, and I did but ever since I came back from the West Coast, I haven't been able to pull myself out of bed before 8am. This morning is beautiful in DC. Cool, breezy...perfect for running. No matter what, I need to get in a run today. It will have to be after work, but it'll happen.

This week isn't going to slow down any either. I'm heading out to Raleigh for work, coming back to DC, and then going to a wedding in Connecticut  this weekend.

I can't wait for Labor Day weekend, when I can finally take some time to relax...lounge poolside, maybe visit a museum or two, go for a hike, who knows? As long as it's local, because, after months of trying to figure out where to go, The Pilot have finally planned our anniversary trip and it's going to be incredible!

But I have to finish telling you about Paris before I tell you where we're going!

My goal for this week (aside from kicking off marathon training) is to finish all of my Paris posts and actually get back into a rhythm with my blog because I miss it!

How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun?
Don't forget, the Beyond Bloggers Book Club link up is this Friday!

You can link up about anything you've been reading lately, but our pick for this month is "Salt to Sea" by Ruta Sepetys. You can vote on next month's pick in our poll here

Coffee Date: Summer Edition

I've been MIA since I came back from Paris and wanted to put up a post and fill you all in on what's been going on!

If we were having coffee I would be drinking mine iced because the heat in DC is oppressive today!

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I've been dragging out my jet lag since we got back from Paris, and it is awesome. I don't love that I'm in bed by 8:45 every night but I love that I'm up by 6 every morning and getting in plenty of time to read, run, eat breakfast, and enjoy my mornings. It has made a world of difference in my summer!

I would tell you that Sea Wheeze training is going really well! Despite oppressive heat and humidity, I still managed to run my 10 mile long run this weekend in under 10 minute miles. It wasn't the 9:30 pace that I wanted but given the circumstances, I'll take it. It's much better than the 12+ I was averaging last summer AND I ran my fastest mile in a LONG time this morning in 8:19. I'm really happy with how my training is going and I think this race is going to segway really nicely into training for Richmond.

I would tell you that The Pilot and I are moving this weekend! We're packing up our tiny Capitol Hill basement apartment for a bigger apartment with a lot more light in a different part of DC. I'm really sad to leave Capitol Hill but I'm excited for our new place and our new neighborhood!

I would tell you that while I'm excited to move, I'm not sure when we'll actually get to spend time in our new apartment! Between Sea Wheeze, a wedding, and a Christening next month, our weekends are pretty booked up for the month of August...and the fall isn't looking much better!

I would also tell you that today marks three years since The Pilot and I got engaged and things have been pretty great ever since.

I'm hoping to get my Paris posts up this week but my apartment is full of boxes and we still have a lot of packing to do!

What's going on in your world? What would you tell me over a coffee date?

April 25, 2016

Morning Coffee

Good Morning friends! Happy Monday!

It's been awhile since I've written one of these posts and since my posts have been less frequent than normal, I thought I'd update you all on what's been going on over a little coffee date!

So, if we were having coffee, I would tell you that:

I think I'm still jetlagged from my trip to San Francisco. A few really late nights at work this week didn't help. but I'm exhausted. I had the day off on Friday and I slept until 11. Saturday wasn't much different. I spent the day binge watching Gilmore Girls while doing laundry and a little bit of cleaning, but I really needed the weekend to just veg out.

I didn't run once last week...or any other form of exercise. I came back from San Francisco with a really strange soreness in my hip and I was exhausted, so I took the week off. I already feel better.

I still hate my haircut. Yup, the one I got 2 months ago? My bangs are growing out in the weirdest way possible and pinning them back isn't an option because of the way they were cut and I'm agonizing over the day that they fully grow back.

Monthly meal planning is working out wonderfully. I wrote this post at the beginning of the month about my meal planning epiphany to meal plan once at the beginning of the month and recycle all meals. On top of being wildly easy, I'm saving so much money by not having food go to waste and knowing exactly what to do with what's in my fridge. I wanted to test this out before I went into detail about it, but since it's working so well, I plan to share next month's meal plan with menus and walk you through the process week by week!

I need a serious reset on my work-life balance. I love my job but I have never been so busy in my life. Things will hopefully slow down a little bit in May before picking back up again in June, but I need to start making more time for myself - morning workouts, planned lunch breaks, scheduled time-outs in the evening, more time for reading, more time outside (if it ever gets warm enough to actually just be able to lay in the grass and enjoy the sun), etc.

My first year in Junior League is almost over. I'll finish the last of my requirements this week and then I'll be done! I liked my first year in the League but I'm excited for next year when I won't have as many requirements.

I'm on Season 3 of Gilmore Girls and I'm totally hooked. I don't know why I never watched this show when it was on, but I love it!

That's all I've got! I'm hoping to back to posting regularly soon!
What would you talk about over coffee this morning?

March 14, 2016

Monday Morning Coffee

Good Morning friends!

I was really under the weather this weekend and missed out on a lot of fun weekend plans. I'm slowly coming back to life, but I thought I'd fill you in on what's been going on in my busy, busy world over a coffee date!

I slept for 24 hours this weekend. I came home from work Friday and was completely exhausted. I was in bed by 9:30 and slept until 10:00 Saturday morning when I woke up with a miserable cold. I spent the day on the couch watching episodes of Gilmore Girls and catching up on Scandal, Downton Abbey, and Once Upon a Time. It wasn't a bad way to spend a Saturday, except for the fact that I was sick. Sunday morning, I slept even later...until noon. Yikes!

Friday was quite possibly the best workday ever. There's a yoga studio here in DC (Flow Yoga on 14th Street for those of you who are local) that started doing Friday Workflow. They set up one of their studios as a work space with tons of different options for standing desks, sitting desks, etc. It' just a super comfortable way to work outside the office complete with meditation and yoga breaks and the option for a Thai Yoga massage which I absolutely took advantage of. I was there with about 7 of my coworkers and it was awesome!

I still hate my haircut. It's starting to grow out and by out, I don't mean longer, I mean physically out. I think I look like one of the three stooged. I've had bangs once before, but they looked way better than these do.

I finished watching Downton Abbey. I like the way it ended, but I feel like they could easily have gone another season.

Carolann and I are taking suggestions for our next book club pick. If you joined the book club, check out the Discussion Board to talk about how you're feeling about The Memory Keeper's Daughter and to suggest a pick for our next book club!

I'm supposed to start marathon training today. I've decided (but not registered) to run the San Francisco Marathon in July and I'm trying out a new training plan that is wildly different from any other plan I've done, but I think it's going to work really well for me. It's Bart Yasso's The Perfect 10. I'll post more about it in one of my Weekly Workout posts, but I'm supposed to start today off with a Tempo run and with how I was feeling this weekend, that might not happen. This training plan offers a lot of wiggle room though, so if it doesn't, I think it'll be ok.

So that's what's going on in this gloomy day in DC.
How are you taking your coffee today? What's going on in your world?

A Coffee Date

This weekend, a friend of mine passed away. She's more than a friend, she's family. She's my cousins' cousin and we grew up together. She was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer at 25 and passed away this weekend at 30. Despite her diagnosis, she always walked into the room with a smile on her face. She was an absolutely beautiful person and her passing is devastating. If you can keep her family in your prayers, I would appreciate it.

I didn't plan any blog posts for this week so I'm pulling this post together on my way in to work. I've been really good at writing and scheduling posts on the weekend and I feel like it's helped me to be a better, more consistent writer but this week, it just didn't happen.

Speaking of writing this on my commute, can we talk about how terrible the blogger app is? I don't understand it. It might be the worst app I've ever used.

This weekend, despite planning to unplug, I spent most of my Saturday reading and getting lost on the internet. My mind just needed to be elsewhere.

I did manage to get a lot of cleaning finished. I finished reading "Spark Joy" and I feel like it gave me a lot of great tips for how to keep things clean. My plans to reorganize my closet were put on hold though, since the drawers I ordered still haven't shipped, despite ordering them from The Container Store a week ago.

I did go through most of my clothes though and pull anything that didn't "spark joy." Now I feel like I don't have any clothes. This wasn't really a surprise to me since more often than not, I put something on in the morning that I don't actually like, but I just hate shopping. I got my first Stitch Fix last month and only kept one item. I was pretty disappointed with the box. The item I kept was a black blazer. I kept it more out of necessity than anything. I have another Fix coming next week so I hope I have better luck.

I ran 5 miles on Saturday. I think it was the longest run I've done since Chicago. I didn't really plan how far I was going to run and it felt so good. I followed it with 3 miles on Sunday and I felt great after both runs. I enjoyed both runs too which is something I haven't been able to say for a long time. I hope I keep that up.

I'm 21 days into my 30-day yoga challenge, which is 2 days longer than either of the last two times I've attempted this challenge. I miss studio classes though so when I finish this, I'd like to attepmt a 30-day studio challenge.

I know three people who are having babies right now so I've bought a lot of baby/maternity things lately. Now the Internet thinks I'm pregnant and all of my ads are about maternal care and hospitals with the best neonatal care and the best strollers. It's annoying and creepy and makes me hate the internet.

Yesterday I was telling someone that I want to listen to more podcasts but don't have time because I read during my commute. This morning, I got so fed up listening to a certain presidential candidate that I turned off the TV and downloaded a podcast and listened to that while I was getting ready. So now I've found time to listen to podcasts, at least until after the election is over. Any recommendations for good ones?

That's all I've got for you today. I hope you all had a great weekend.
May your Monday be short and your coffee be strong.
(That is seriously my new favorite thing to say.)

If We Were Having Coffee {Snow Day Edition}

You guys, this weekend is crazy and I honestly love it. There is so much snow, it's ridiculous. With well over two feet and DC declaring a State of Emergency, this weekend has definitely been eventful. I've never seen snow continue to fall nonstop for this long. Since I am not leaving my house anytime soon, let's have a coffee date, shall we?

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that Peyton is loving all of this snow. She got a little bit lost trying to find our house on her evening walk last night, but she's having a blast. Although, I think this Florida-born pup is confused as to where she actually is since, all you can see anywhere in any direction, is snow.

I would tell you that I had grand plans for baking and reorganizing during this snowstorm and I haven't done any of it. I've been couch-ridden with crippling back pain that nothing is helping. This has meant no baking, no reorganizing, and unfortunately, no yoga or running!..although, I wouldn't be running in this anyway.

I would tell you that I really hope they close my office tomorrow. Aside from the fact that snow days are great, I don't think I could physically get to work. My street hasn't been cleared and the sidewalks are atrocious.

I would tell you that I finally sent in my passport to get a new one since I ran out of pages and changed my name. I had major anxiety about this because I don't ever like to be without a passport. Of course, the day I dropped my passport off, my mom called and asked if I wanted to go to Belgium in three weeks BUT her trip got postponed and the US Passport tracker says that I should receive my passport on or about this weekend...only three weeks after I submitted it!

I would tell you that I'm excited to link up next week with Chelle for her new Reading Lately link up! I might link up with her every month instead of doing quarterly book reviews. We'll see!

What would you tell me if we were having coffee? News from the outside world, I hope!
I'm off to make some more hot chocolate!
Stay warm everyone!

So Long 2015!

Since I started this blog in 2010, I've committed to goals at the start of every year and loved seeing my progress at the end of each year.

I didn't do that last year.

Instead, I said, "I don't want to be bound by a to-do list for the year. I want to be adventurous and spontaneous and I want to learn things and see things and do things."

I made a list of some things that I wanted to work on but didn't really care if I did. Those things included yoga, making more food at home, rather than buying pre-packaged stuff, shopping locally at my local farmers' market, reading more non-fiction, saving money, and exploring more of DC,

I started off the year doing a lot of yoga...and that took a backseat. I've definitely been better at doing yoga at home this year thanks to Yoga with Adriene, but I don't think I get as much out of yoga in my living room (with the dog running around me and the oven preheating for dinner) as I do in a studio.

I definitely tried my hand in some Adventures in Homemade - homemade bread, homemade tomato sauce, pasteis de nata (from Portugal), but I'd like to get better at that, and actually blog about those adventures.

Clockwise from Left: Apple Picking in VA, Hiking in Rock Creek Park, a homemade lattice top pie, at home yoga, "The Bully Pulpit" by Doris Kearns Goodwin
I think I shopped at the Farmers' Market once.

I failed miserably at exploring more of DC. We moved into a new neighborhood and I love it so much, I hardly ever left. I definitely read way more non-fiction than usual and I saved a ton of money.

I definitely had some awesome experiences in 2015. I was finally able to race uninjured and did so at DC Rock 'n' RollCherry Blossom, and finally, Chicago. I traveled a lot.

  • I celebrated my sister's 40th birthday at the Sundance Film Festival.
  • The Pilot and I visited my sister in San Francisco.
  • My mom and I went to Lisbon together, and The Pilot joined.
  • We celebrated our 1st anniversary in Hawaii and then took off on an impromptu trip to Dubai six weeks later.
  • I spent a few days in St. Louis for work, and fell in love with the city.

This year definitely brought some awesome memories and adventures, but at the same time, it was really hard.

The Pilot and I spent more time apart than we ever have. He started the year away in training for a new job for 3 months...and then left again for training with another airline at the beginning of December. He left right after Peyton's surgery and it was tough taking care of her by myself. Peyton's cancer diagnosis in itself was a tough blow but I'm so grateful that we were able to act quickly with the support of some really generous family and friends.

I don't think I was my best self in 2015. I think I was selfish in a lot of regards, but at the same time, I didn't really do anything for myself. I half-assed my way through marathon training, almost reinjuring myself in the process. I spent more time on my couch this year than ever before, I turned down a lot of plans and invitations and secluded myself. I'm not even really sure why.

I'll be 29 in 2016 and lately, I've been thinking a lot about where I want to be at 30. I want to be more committed this year...to everything...to running, to blogging, to my family, to traveling...everything. I want to be my best self at 29 and that means saying "Yes" a lot more, and being the adventurous, spontaneous self that has always made my happiest. I'll be back later this week with how I plan to make that happen!

So, let's raise a glass to 2015...and another one to 2016!
How did your year shape up?

Coffee Date: Marathon Edition

Holy smokes kids, it's Race Week! Months of training and here it is! Let's have a cup of coffee and talk about how I'm feeling about it, shall we? Sit down, grab a cup of pumpkin spice (or whatever it i you fancy) and join me.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that my mom is amazing and booked a last minute flight to Chicago yesterday so that she can be at my race.

I would tell you that despite a great 10 mile run this weekend, I was still completely terrified of running Chicago until my social media feeds blew up with Wineglass and Twin Cities Marathon updates. Now, I'm pumped. The only run I did last week was that 10 mile run. I really just didn't feel like running throughout the week, so I didn't, but I'm feeling really good right now...and slightly terrified still.

I think the reason I'm so terrified is that this will be  the first marathon I've gone into without having done a training race before. I haven't raced since Cherry Blossom, so the whole race day feel just feels slightly unfamiliar.

I would tell you that my Garmin is dying and I'm not sure what to do about it. I bought The Pilot one for his birthday so I can use his for the race, but I'm debating whether to run with it at all. I'm worried about going out too fast without it but I like the idea of just enjoying the run. I've run some of my best races watch-less.

I would tell you that I didn't get into the London Marathon and I'm fine with it. It was the sixth consecutive year that I didn't get into this race and it's number 1 on my race bucket list but I was so miserable training for the DC Rock 'n' Roll Half this winter that the idea of training for 26.2 in the middle of the winter terrifies me, but I did get into the Seawheeze Half-Marathon! I'll be taking my first trip to Vancouver in August and running with my New York running buddy, Emily. It's almost a year away, but I have big goals for this race.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that The Pilot and I went to a spin class at Biker Barre on Sunday night. He had a great workout. I was on a bike with a broken resistance knob and was bored the whole time.

I would also tell you that we didn't do much of anything else this weekend. The weather in DC was miserable and I was perfectly content to lounge around the house.

I would tell you that I need a vacation...or maybe just a staycation. Hawaii was fabulous but we were up at the crack of dawn every morning and on the go. I need either a stay-in-your-pajamas-and-binge-watch-tv-all-week week or a roast-on-a-beach-in-a-lounge-chair vacation. It's crazy cold in DC so obviously the latter is preferable but I don't think either are going to happen any time soon.

What's on your mind this morning?
What kind of coffee are you drinking and what would you tell me?

Monday Morning Coffee

Good Morning!

I hope you're all well rested from wonderful weekends and excited to tackle the week ahead!

If we were having coffee... I would tell you that I had an incredible weekend. It was absolutely gorgeous out and I spent a lot of time with some wonderful people.

Friday night kicked off with Happy Hour with Jenn and her Mister. The Pilot and I met up with them at a bar in Clarendon for some happy hour specials, snacks and lots of laughs. Afterward, one of my old coworkers invited us to a barbecue in our neighborhood so we headed over there for some drinks and met some really awesome people! It was so nice afterward to just walk two blocks home, instead of having to worry about the metro.

If we were having coffee... I would tell you just how much I love that about my new neighborhood...that we have friends that are walking distance and that we bump into them when we're out and about.

I would tell you that Saturday, The Pilot and I took a day trip to Annapolis. I had never been there before and we spent the early part of the day wandering around the Naval Academy before Ally and her new fiance (as of that morning!) met us for lunch! It was so exciting to celebrate with them and spend the day on the water, watching all of the boats cruising by.

I would tell you that on Sunday morning, I finally went for my first post-Cherry Blossom run. The Pilot and I took Peyton on an easy 3 mile run on a new trail we discovered. It was my first shorts and t-shirt run of the season and it was hot and absolutely glorious. The temperature hit almost 80 yesterday and I loved it. I am definitely a warm weather girl and am so excited about summer.

If we were having coffee... I would tell you that I"m really excited about a few different things. First, The Pilot and I are embarking on 30 days of no processed foods and I'm really excited for it. It requires a lot of cooking (which I did a lot of yesterday) but I think it's going to be great and I'm hoping we can use this to try to transition into an almost completely un-processed household.

I would also tell you that my big sister launched a new project about which I'm so excited about! I'm writing a post about it soon so I won't keep you all in the dark for too long!

I would tell you that I'm really excited to start marathon training again. I haven't trained for a marathon since before I moved to DC and I'm excited to tackle some serious mileage in this city. My biggest focus right now is making it to the starting line, but that prospect alone is really exciting!  It's been 2 1/2 years since my last 26.2 and I miss the distance and can't wait for this one!

If we were having coffee... for the first time since September, I left my house without a jacket today and that it is finally spring and that, in itself, is enough for a great week!

Happy Monday!
Hope your weekend was awesome!

Weekend Thoughts

I really needed to unplug this weekend. I needed to just spend sometime alone and do my own thing this weekend. I got home Friday from work, poured myself a glass of wine and made myself some dinner. I watched some TV, straightened some stuff up around the house and called it a night.

Saturday morning, I set an alarm for 8:30 so that I could get up for yoga and not rush. I got a glorious 9 1/2 hours of sleep and felt amazing when I woke up. I made some coffee, whipped up an omelet, took Peyton for a quick walk and had an awesome yoga class. I felt great afterward. The sun was starting to peek out so I took Peyton for a nice, long walk around the neighborhood before heading to the farmer's market to pick up some stuff.

By the time I got home from the Farmer's Market, I had already done 12,000 steps for the day...and it wasn't even 3:00! Naturally, I decided to go for a run. I laced up my sneakers and headed out for an easy 3 miles...my first run post-race. I finished the 3 miles, but my knee started hurting 3/4 of a mile in, which was really unnerving, especially after taking a full week off post-race.

I came back, stretched, whipped up a green smoothie and took Peyton out to the backyard while I sat and read my book for awhile.

I came back inside, did a few more things around the house and took Peyton for another long walk. just as the sun was setting. It was starting to turn into a gorgeous night and she loved being outside.

While we were walking, I came across a Little Free Library. Do you guys know about these? They're little book libraries people put in front of their houses. The mentality is "Take a book, leave a book." I love it so much and there are a bunch of them in our neighborhood. I can't wait until we have a house of our own and I can build one!

I picked up this thriller, which sold me based on this sentence alone "...a vividly evocative love letter to London"... and will definitely be reading it soon.

After our little walk, I roasted up some brussel sprouts for dinner and had myself a "Scandal" bingefest before calling it a night.

Sunday morning, I got up, took Peyton out and spent the morning watching "Friends" on Netflix while meal prepping for the week. I had just bought some dates (which I had never used before) and basically put them in everything I made. I did a lot of stuff around the house, finished my taxes and then spent most of afternoon hanging out in the backyard before heading to church.

It was a perfectly refreshing weekend. I didn't really do anything spectacular, I just spent a lot of time doing things that I wanted to do and it was just what I needed. Going into this week, I feel nice and refreshed and I'm ready for a great week!

Do you ever take a weekend to just disconnect in order to reconnect with yourself?
What's the best thing you did all weekend?

The Libester Award {Discover New Blogs!}

Last week, my friend Carolann tagged me in a blog post after being awarded The Liebster Award. It's a way to raise the profile of other bloggers and, since I've been finding and exploring so many new blogs lately, I was excited to participate!

Here's how it works:
1. Thank the blogger who nominated you and link back to their site
2. Write a post answering the questions you were given
3. Nominate 5 – 11 other bloggers for the award (let them know you have done so!) and come up with a set of 10 – 11 questions for them to answer
4. Enjoy!

So, here are Carolann's questions for me:

1. What are you reading right now? Atlantis Never Lost - The Story of Santorini...a book I picked up on our honeymoon at this adorable little book shop on Santorini.

2. What advice do you have for new bloggers? Focus on what makes your blog YOUR blog. Don't worry about what other bloggers are doing, always remember why you started blogging in the first place and work to maintain your unique voice. I've been blogging for five years and the blogging world has changed so much since then...some if for the better, some of it not as much.
3. How do you stay creative with your blog? In other words, where do you get your inspiration, and how do you come up with ideas for new posts? This is definitely something that can be a challenge. This year, I've started trying to plan out my posts for the month and I've definitely started using the Drafts tool. Sometimes, I'll write just three sentences into a draft post on something that I want to write about later...whether it's my thoughts on a particular subject, a flashback to somewhere I've been before or anything else!
A little oasis in the middle of DC (Rock Creek Park)
4. What is your favorite thing about where you live? Washington, DC is an incredible place to live. I love that I'm walking distance from everything: museums, restaurants, national parks, etc. I don't own a car and I hate driving so being able to just walk out my door and be surrounded my history is what makes me fall in love with this city a little bit more every single day.
5. Share a link to your favorite go-to weeknight dinner recipe! This edamame pasta is so easy and so delicious! Recipe in the comments section!

6. How would you spend an extra $100? Right now, I'm focusing on saving, rather than spending but if I had an extra $100, I'd probably spend it on a weekend getaway! There are a lot of super cute towns near DC that I haven't been to yet!
7. What’s the best place you have ever traveled to? Sarajevo, I fell in love with that city in a way I didn't think I ever could.
8.  What is a skill you would like to learn? I'd love to learn to speak French!
9. What is your favorite TV show? I really like Sherlock, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. I hate that Season 4 isn't coming out until next year!
10. Which blog post are you most proud of? Share a link! "Finding my Strong" I posted it just before I headed to Madrid for the 2012 Madrid Marathon. It was my 2nd attempt at a sub-4 race and up until that point, I really didn't think I could do it. Unfortunately, I didn't, but it's still my favorite post.

For this award, I'm tagging Erin (Erin Runs Happy), Megan (Semi-Charmed Kind of Life), Tara (Running 'n' Reading), Dawn (Sneaker Therapy), and Erin (Love, Fun and Football). Here are the questions I have!

1. What is one thing that has changed for you as a result of blogging?
2. If there were no obstacles and you could pack your bags and leave tomorrow, where would you go?
3. If you came to visit me in DC, what would be the first stop on your itinerary?
4. Are you a baseball fan? Who's your team? If you're not, go here and pick one and tell us why you picked them!
5. What's your favorite season? What's your favorite thing to do during that season?
6. What is the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night?
7. If you could live in any place other than where you live now, where would it be?
8. What is your favorite blog post you've written?
9. What's the number 1 thing on your Amazon Wish List?
10. Do you still subscribe to magazines? What are your favorites?

If anyone else wants to take on these questions, I'd love to read your answers! Leave a link to the post in the comments! Have a great weekend!
