2018 State of the Blog

This March will be my 8th year of blogging at Planes, Trains, and Running Shoes (formerly 25 Before 25). In that time, I've lived in Boston, New York, DC, and now, Baltimore.

I've blogged about running, traveling, life, big changes, hopes, dreams, fears, and everything in between. While I've been really inconsistent with posting over the last two years, I'm really trying to change that. I love this space for everything it is - from the wildly embarrassing posts I wrote as a 22-year-old that I'm so tempted to delete to the training plans I've logged, the recipes I've shared, and all of the excitement some of you have shared through my biggest life moments.

I've met some of my very best friends through this blog, friends who I truly couldn't imagine my life without.

As I've been trying to write more posts and be more consistent, I've trying to figure out what I really want to be writing about. I'm not a 20-something blogger anymore and as hard as it is for me to say, running isn't everything for me right now the way that it was when I first started this blog. I still have dreams of running a sub-4 marathon and I know that one day, I will but this blog is so much more than just running.

When I started this blog, I did it out of boredom and, some of my earlier posts definitely reflect that, but as I've continued blogging, I've done it for two primary reasons: 1) this amazing community and 2) because I genuinely love sharing my travel stories, my race recaps, and a lot of the details about my life!

But there is so much from this blog that's missing! I lived in DC for five years and never wrote any kind of post about my favorite things to do there, places to go, or things to see. It's one of the top tourist destinations in America and I never really shared anything about my slice of home, except for a few "This is what I did this weekend" posts! Even though I'm living in Baltimore now, I'm still working in DC a few days each week so I plan to change that, while also sharing all about Baltimore as I'm discovering it! I want my travel posts - whether they're about DC, Baltimore, or my latest international adventure - to be useful! I absolutely love when I get emails or comments asking me about a place I've been or telling me that my post inspired someone to book a trip somewhere!

This is why I've continued blogging. And in that time, I've started reading really different types of blogs. I adore home design blogs and cooking blogs, I love reading career and finance advice, all of the things that are relevant to my life right now!

So, as I'm looking ahead to celebrating 8 years of blogging, I'm planning to take my blog into my 30th year and start writing more about the things that are actually relevant to my life. It's been 6 weeks since we moved into our Baltimore home and we've barely started exploring but I love it! I want to share Baltimore with you. and DC! I want to share what I actually do for a living and why, even though I fell into it by accident, I love it. I want to share our home and what it looks like as we're starting to make it feel more like home every day. I want to share advice about the worst job interview I ever had (and how to avoid making that mistake) and how we were actually able to afford a home, and what we did to do so! I want to share all of the recipes I have brewing in my head. I want to share the struggles I've had this last year in the hopes that anyone going through what I have knows that they aren't alone.

I still plan to be a "lifestyle blogger" but I want to be more intentional about what I'm sharing and why I'm sharing it. Too often, I've written blog posts for the sole purpose of posting. I still have every intention of Planes, Trains, and Running Shoes being an outlet for me to share about my life, but I also want it to be a resource for those who are looking for a new travel destination, a new book to read or want to start running. And I want a lot of that to be driven by the very people who have continued reading this blog whether I've posted every day or haven't posted in a month.

So I'm asking all of you - what would you like to see more of? What brings you back to the blogs you read each day?

Over the next few weeks, I'll be working on new, more intentional content, planning some fun trips, and thinking about what I want to share about DC and Baltimore! I'll also be working on a new blog design! I can't wait for it to unfold and I hope you'll follow along!

Hello 2017!

Good Morning, friends! Happy New Year! It's a cold, rainy, gloomy day in DC which is weirdly, just what I need. I rang in the New Year by falling asleep at 10pm (moving is hard!) and then hanging out with a good friend who happens to be my new neighbor.

I love the start of the New Year. I think it's such a fantastic way to look back on the past year and look ahead. Last year, my theme for the year was growth and I'm going to keep that theme. We never stop growing, do we? We learn lessons and we make changes, but we never stop growing.

Looking back to this time last year, I'm definitely a happier person. 2015 was a tough year and, while 2016 was much better, I came out of the year with a desperate need for self care. I'm linking up with Helene tomorrow to recap my year but the one lesson I learned from 2016 was the importance of taking care of yourself. For the first time in my life, I had a job that I felt like I couldn't put down at 5pm on week days and, while, that definitely isn't the case, I had virtually no work life balance. I would be on the treadmill answering work emails. By the time December, my industry's busiest month, rolled around, I felt burned out. This year, I need to learn to put a serious focus on work life balance.

Because of the lack of a work life balance, my blog seriously suffered. I never had time to post and when I did, I was too tired to sit in front of a computer and craft a post. I started last year with a 31-day blogging challenge and by March, I was posting maybe once per week. This year, I'm committing to spending at least 4 hours per week on my blog. I've planned out all of my posts for the month of January and actually have a plan to bring my blog back to it's former, for lack of a better word, glory. This will be the 7th year that I've had this blog and I don't want this hobby to fall to the way side. I need to be realistic about my plans for posting, connecting with other bloggers, and growing my blog, but at the end of the day, I just want to be blogging again.

Looking back on my goals from last year, I feel like all of my goals for this year are the same. I don't look at that as a failed 2016 but as an opportunity for a better 2017! So, in list form, here are my goals for 2017 (mostly repeated from 2016):

  • Run a sub-4 marathon: Goodness, I'm sick of making this a goal. I've had a goal to run a sub-4 marathon since 2011. I know people who eke out 10, 15, 20, 40 minute PRs and over my seven year running career, I've knocked off a whopping 7 minutes from my marathon. I'll share my running goals in another post this month but I'm tackling 2 marathons this year to try to finally get that sub-4 finish.
  • Do another 30-day yoga challenge: I did an at-home yoga challenge last year. This year, I'd like to up the ante and try a 30-day in-studio challenge, or at least mix it up with half the time in the studio and half the time at home.
  • Finish my 30 before 30:  I'll be 30 next month and I'm only about one-third of the way through my 30 Before 30 list but I'd like to finish the list by the end of 2017.
  • Hit 30 countries: I've traveled to 26 countries. I think it would be awesome to make it to 30 in my 30th year!
  • Take a cooking class: The Pilot's parents bought us a gift certificate to a culinary school in DC for Christmas! I'm so excited!
  • Cook at least one recipe from every single one of my cookbooks: I have a cookbook addiction. My obsession with Little Free Libraries and the propensity of people in my neighborhood to leave cookbooks in them doesn't help. Yet, I have a lot of cookbooks that I've never touched. I need to change that or make a plan to get rid of some of these books.
Of course, my goals that always go without saying are to read and travel as much as possible. The Pilot and I already have trips planned for January and February and are looking at a mini vacation in March. My mom and I are planning our annual summer trip, and then there's always our anniversary trip to plan! I'm aching to go back to London, dying to explore more of Asia, and aiming for another race in another country!

I'm excited for 2017. DC is going to be an interesting city to live in this year but that's just part of this city's charm. I'm excited to crush my running goals, travel the world, and continue to work on being my best self. This year, I'm going to be 30 and this year is going to be great! I hope you'll follow along.
What are your goals for this year?

Cuba

President Obama is in Cuba right now. Last week , US airlines announced full-service flights to Havana. It's legal to go to Cuba now.

I consider my blog to be a lifestyle blog with a heavy mix of running and travel. Today, I'm not writing about Cuba as a travel destination. I'm writing about something much more personal.

My father left Cuba in 1964. I am a Cuban American. I've dreamed of visiting Cuba my entire life, of seeing where he grew up and went to school, of walking the Malecon and listening to my grandparent's stories about Carnival.

I have very mixed feelings about everything pertaining to Cuba right now. I'm actually quite sensitive about it. I am 100% in favor of the restoration of diplomatic relations between the US and Cuba but my family strictly opposes it, for reasons that I completely understand.

When the president announced the restoration of diplomatic relations last year, I started planning my trip to Cuba. It was the number 1 item on my 30 Before 30 list.

Was.

I don't know anymore.

For the last year, I've gotten really tired of people saying, "You should go to Cuba before it gets ruined."

It infuriates me. It boils my blood. It makes me so exceptionally angry that I've had to walk out of the room when people say that.

How is Cuba going to be ruined? Because McDonald's and Starbucks are going to open there? Because Americans are going to be able to travel there? There's a McDonald's on the Champs d'Elysees in Paris, just steps from the Arc du Triomphe and I don't hear anyone shouting that Paris has been ruined. Thousands of European and South American tourists have been flocking to Cuba for the last 50 years. The fact that Americans think that Cuba will be ruined by Americans traveling there is sickening. Do people actually think that the floodgates being opened are going to ruin a country? It's ridiculous. American tourists are not going to ruin Cuba.

Cuba is already ruined.

Cuba was ruined in 1959 when Fidel Castro came to power and destroyed basic human freedom.

My grandparents left Cuba in 1964. They are in their 90s and have never gone back. The Cuba that my grandparents called home is gone.

Until three years ago, it was illegal to leave the country without permission and permission was never granted. Think about that. It was illegal to leave Cuba. In the 52 years since my grandparents have left, the reasons that they did so not only remain, but have worsened. Cuba is a country where there is no free press, free speech, or freedom of assembly, where Internet freedom is nonexistent...where accessing Gmail can land you in prison.

Yoani Sanchez is a Cuban blogger who blogs at Generation Y. Since 2009, she has been blogging by emailing her posts to Cuban friends living in the US. She hasn't set eyes on her blog in 7 years because her blog has been banned by the Cuban government. She's been invited to speak at several conferences across the world and has never been able to attend because she can't leave Cuba.

Americans can go to Cuba but Cubans cannot come to America, where 1.2 million of their friends, families, and loved ones have been fleeing to since 1959.

Cuba is already ruined. It was ruined the minute it became unbearable for people like my grandparents who left, rather than spend their lives living in fear of a repressive government.

People want to go to Cuba because it's forbidden fruit.

I want to go to Cuba because it's who I am. My mom was born in the Dominican Republic. I've been to the DR and seen the house she grew up in, the hotel where my grandfather worked as a bell boy when he met my grandmother, I've seen my family's Dominican Republic. I want to go to Cuba and have those same experiences. I want to see my family's Cuba.

My family will not go back to Cuba under the current leadership so I don't know if I will go. I don't want to go to Havana and walk around blindly like a tourist. I want to go to Cuba and an identity that I am tied to, but have no experience of.

Cuba is already ruined so no, I don't feel the need to rush there before it gets ruined. Cuba is not forbidden fruit to me. It's who I am.

How I Spent My Staycation

So I went to Dubai last week. Don't worry, I'm sorting through pictures and getting ready to tell you all about it!

The trip was certainly a whirlwind and I was so grateful to come home to a staycation! I definitely made the most of my half week at home and I'm ready to tackle the week ahead! Here's what I did with my staycation!

I watched a lot of Netflix. I caught up on the current season of Scandal, watched the latest episodes of Once Upon a Time, watched a lot of The Goldbergs, and basically spent the entire day Wednesday in front of the TV.

I finally ran. I hadn't run since the Chicago Marathon but Thursday morning, I laced up my shoes and headed out for 3 easy miles around my neighborhood.

I read. I finished The Zookeeper's Wife and started All the President's Men.

I reorganized my desk/bookshelf area. It had become the landing pad in our apartment and wasn't being used as a desk. It's much cleaner now!

The Pilot and I took a trip to Mount Vernon where we ran into our landlord with her kids and spent the day exploring with them.

We took Peyton hiking in Rock Creek Park and had cupcakes at Baked and Wired. The foliage in Rock Creek was so pretty that I stopped hating fall for a minute (until I turned my clocks back that night).

We watched the World Series. It didn't end well.

I made a lattice top apple pie...and crossed another thing off of my 30 before 30 list!

I worked on my blog. I drafted a lot of posts, pulled together some awesome images, and started working on a new header. I've been toying around with a new header for ages, and after not being able to decide on one, I decided to get your feedback. So, which do you like better?

They both need some work, but I would love your feedback! Feel free to make some suggestions as well!

What's your favorite way to spend a staycation? Let me know in the comments!

30 before 30

I was 22-years-old, fresh out of college and working my first job when I started this blog. I was living in Boston...a city I had moved to without having ever visited...just for a job that I didn't really love. One day, while flipping through a magazine in a doctor's office, I read an article called "Yes! You Can Run a Half-Marathon!" So, I decided to run a half-marathon and said that one day, I would run a Full too. I started this blog with running a marathon at the top of my 25 before 25 list.

You all know where that story went. Here I am...five years later...still blogging...still running...and I think it's time to nod my head to my roots and let you all know about something else I've been working on...my 30 Before 30 list.

In no particular order, following the theme of some personal, some professional and some just fun, here is my 30 Before 30 list. Some of these are repeats from my 25 Before 25...either because I didn't get to them...or because I'm starting them again. You can read that list here.

The Libester Award {Discover New Blogs!}

Last week, my friend Carolann tagged me in a blog post after being awarded The Liebster Award. It's a way to raise the profile of other bloggers and, since I've been finding and exploring so many new blogs lately, I was excited to participate!

Here's how it works:
1. Thank the blogger who nominated you and link back to their site
2. Write a post answering the questions you were given
3. Nominate 5 – 11 other bloggers for the award (let them know you have done so!) and come up with a set of 10 – 11 questions for them to answer
4. Enjoy!

So, here are Carolann's questions for me:

1. What are you reading right now? Atlantis Never Lost - The Story of Santorini...a book I picked up on our honeymoon at this adorable little book shop on Santorini.

2. What advice do you have for new bloggers? Focus on what makes your blog YOUR blog. Don't worry about what other bloggers are doing, always remember why you started blogging in the first place and work to maintain your unique voice. I've been blogging for five years and the blogging world has changed so much since then...some if for the better, some of it not as much.
3. How do you stay creative with your blog? In other words, where do you get your inspiration, and how do you come up with ideas for new posts? This is definitely something that can be a challenge. This year, I've started trying to plan out my posts for the month and I've definitely started using the Drafts tool. Sometimes, I'll write just three sentences into a draft post on something that I want to write about later...whether it's my thoughts on a particular subject, a flashback to somewhere I've been before or anything else!
A little oasis in the middle of DC (Rock Creek Park)
4. What is your favorite thing about where you live? Washington, DC is an incredible place to live. I love that I'm walking distance from everything: museums, restaurants, national parks, etc. I don't own a car and I hate driving so being able to just walk out my door and be surrounded my history is what makes me fall in love with this city a little bit more every single day.
5. Share a link to your favorite go-to weeknight dinner recipe! This edamame pasta is so easy and so delicious! Recipe in the comments section!

6. How would you spend an extra $100? Right now, I'm focusing on saving, rather than spending but if I had an extra $100, I'd probably spend it on a weekend getaway! There are a lot of super cute towns near DC that I haven't been to yet!
7. What’s the best place you have ever traveled to? Sarajevo, I fell in love with that city in a way I didn't think I ever could.
8.  What is a skill you would like to learn? I'd love to learn to speak French!
9. What is your favorite TV show? I really like Sherlock, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. I hate that Season 4 isn't coming out until next year!
10. Which blog post are you most proud of? Share a link! "Finding my Strong" I posted it just before I headed to Madrid for the 2012 Madrid Marathon. It was my 2nd attempt at a sub-4 race and up until that point, I really didn't think I could do it. Unfortunately, I didn't, but it's still my favorite post.

For this award, I'm tagging Erin (Erin Runs Happy), Megan (Semi-Charmed Kind of Life), Tara (Running 'n' Reading), Dawn (Sneaker Therapy), and Erin (Love, Fun and Football). Here are the questions I have!

1. What is one thing that has changed for you as a result of blogging?
2. If there were no obstacles and you could pack your bags and leave tomorrow, where would you go?
3. If you came to visit me in DC, what would be the first stop on your itinerary?
4. Are you a baseball fan? Who's your team? If you're not, go here and pick one and tell us why you picked them!
5. What's your favorite season? What's your favorite thing to do during that season?
6. What is the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night?
7. If you could live in any place other than where you live now, where would it be?
8. What is your favorite blog post you've written?
9. What's the number 1 thing on your Amazon Wish List?
10. Do you still subscribe to magazines? What are your favorites?

If anyone else wants to take on these questions, I'd love to read your answers! Leave a link to the post in the comments! Have a great weekend!

Happy 5th Birthday Planes, Trains & Running Shoes!

Five years ago I opened up this little corner of the internet.

I was 23, fresh out of college and living in Boston. The Pilot was my boyfriend of 4 months. I had never run a race before.

I posted a list of 25 things I wanted to do before I turned 25. I didn't do 10 of them. Some of them (like horseback riding and learning French) are still on my list. Others (like swimming with dolphins and doing a triathlon) aren't anymore.

Through this blog, I found my passion for running. When I started this blog, I started training for my first half-marathon. I was immediately connected with the amazing running community in the blogging world. To this day, my closest running friends are all bloggers. With the exception of one person, everyone I know who runs is someone I've met through my blog, either directly or indirectly.

Those people are some of my closest friends. Some of them were at my wedding. I see them regularly. We talk, we text, we snail mail. We've met each others families and have seen each other's houses. The idea that we met them through our blogs is so foreign now. Some of them still blog, some of them don't. We're still friends. They're people who are incredibly important to me and I never would have met them if I hadn't started this blog.

Emily, Andrea & Holly
Writing this blog has also taught me to apply a filter a little bit more closely. There are some things that we just don't blog about. Learning, and remembering, to apply that filter to my blog has helped me apply it in my personal life as well as my professional life.

I love writing. It doesn't matter what I'm writing about, I adore it. It's obviously easy to write about yourself, but my new job that I started two months ago? Writer. Five years ago, when I started this blog, I don't think I ever would have started a career as a writer, but here I am...and I love it.

This blog has also taught me about balance. In reading other blogs and getting motivated to work out and train and eat right, I've learned how other people balance work and family life and marathon training and healthy eating...and I've applied it to my own life. The idea of having kids one day and trying to figure out how to "do it all" isn't scary to me anymore because so many other women do it.

I never thought I would blog for this long. I started this blog out of boredom. I never really knew what it would turn into, yet, here I am...five years later and I couldn't be happier.

To all of you who follow my little adventures, I appreciate you more than I can say. Thank you for reading, for commenting, and for supporting me. So, here's to five years of blogging, and to whatever future might be in store!

Thanks for sticking around!
