Good Morning, Baltimore

When The Pilot and I moved to DC five years ago, almost to the day, I didn't think I would ever leave. We got engaged and married in DC, made lifelong friends, and really made DC our home.

I swore I would never leave DC unless it was to move overseas. Yet, we just bought a house in Baltimore.

I love DC. It's the first city I've lived in since I left London 10 years ago that truly felt like home. I never got tired of running on the National Mall or seeing the first pops of pink every Cherry Blossom season that rolled around. I love that I could go to museums and monuments for lunch. I love how much pride the city has, the DC flags on everything from bicycle helmets to keychain, and the fact that no matter how amazing my latest vacation, I always felt good coming home.

So why did we leave?

The long and short of it is that we couldn't afford to buy a house in DC. We were looking at condos for a while but with DC's housing market exponentially rising by the minute, it wasn't long before we were priced out of the condo market too. We had our eye on a 2-bedroom condo that was being built across the street from us but when it hit the market for $265,000 MORE than the highest number we thought it might be listed at, we knew our time in DC was up.

I'm a city girl, always have been. I haven't owned a car for 8 years and don't plan on buying another one if I can avoid it. I would go stir crazy living in a place where I had to drive to the nearest park or coffee shop. We could have moved to the DC suburbs but I didn't like any of the areas we looked in that were actually metro accessible.

There are areas of DC that are still somewhat affordable but any house in those areas are going to need a lot of work. Plus, with my 4-mile commute already taking up to 90 minutes, we didn't want to move any further away from my office.

So we turned to Baltimore. 35 miles outside of DC and easily accessible by the MARC train, my commute from Baltimore to DC wouldn't be much different than it already was.

I've joked to friends that buying this house was both the smartest and dumbest decision we've ever made. On the one hand, it's an investment. We're no longer throwing money into rent each month. On the other hand, we don't know anything about Baltimore and we bought the first and only house we looked at (assured by friends in Baltimore on a number of different counts that this house was a smart move).

For a long time after our offer was accepted, I worried whether we were making the right decision but as we've started settling in, I know we absolutely did. I've loved making our house our home despite what was a hellish moving experience that involved snow, an entire room worth of stuff left behind, and having to replace the washing machine within days of moving in (which led to us replacing the laundry room floor less than 2 weeks after moving in).

We have barely gone out to explore Baltimore and but so far, it's already starting to feel like home and I know that this decision was the right one.

I'll still be working in DC one or two days every week, which I think I need. While I know that we made the right decision, it wasn't an easy one to make and in a lot of ways, I feel like DC let me down, not only on the housing front. We aren't the first people we know to make this move because DC and we've already met two people here who have made the same move. The sad thing is that DC isn't doing anything to keep the city affordable for families.

At first, we said that in a few years, we might make the move back to DC but as we're settling in, Baltimore is already starting to feel like home.

I can't wait for the weather to warm up so we can frequent Camden Yards, go crabbing on the Harbor, drink Natty Bohs on our patio, and make ourselves at home. I've always said that DC is the greatest city in America but Baltimore actually has that title!

One thing I regret about my time in DC is not blogging about all of my best-kept secrets, frequent haunts, and favorite spots. While I'll still be in DC part-time, I definitely plan to blog more about both of these cities that are home!

First Coffee Date of 2017

If we were having coffee, I would tell you... that I feel so behind with life right now. On Wednesday, almost two weeks ago, while I was at work, my stepmom called me and told me that my dad had had a heart attack. Two and a half hours later, I was on a plane to Dallas. I brought one change of clothes and my running gear (which I never leave home without) with plans to stay in Texas for a night or two. When we learned that my dad would have to have open heart surgery, my plans changed. I ended up being in Texas for a total of 10 days. My dad is getting out of the hospital today and is doing great. I'm so glad I could be there but it was a very long time to be away for an unplanned period of time, especially for something that was as emotionally taxing as this. This was way different from the occasional 'Oops' vacations The Pilot and I take, which we usually plan around neither of us having anything to do in the immediate future.

I would tell you that while I was in Texas, I caught the flu. I spent Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at my sister's house with my 10-year-old niece, who also had the flu. Despite a prescription and a lot of meds, I don't feel any better than I did when I first got sick.

I would tell you that I ran once while in Texas, a grand total of 3 miles, and didn't practice yoga once. My legs are literally itching to run and I'm starting to get really nervous abut Disney being 2 weeks away considering I've now been forced to take 3 1/2 weeks off from training due to illness and injury.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you... that I really thought I would have my new apartment unpacked and in order by now and that I am so far from that, it's ridiculous.

I would tell you that I'm really grateful for my company's flexible work schedule because today is the only day this week that I have to be in the office, so I'll be able to fight off this flu while working from home the rest of the week.

I would tell you that I bought myself the "Year of Cozy" and I'm a little bit obsessed with all of the fun things I've been making. The book is organized by month and I did most of the January things and am hoping to jump on the February ones soon.

I would tell you that one of my New Year's Resolutions is to waste less. As someone who usually only cooks for one, I was embarrassed by the amount food I was throwing out on a weekly basis. While I had to throw out a ton of food after unexpectedly being away for so long, I'm really happy with how well I've done. I've been meal planning according to what I'm shopping for, focusing on rotating the same veggies or herbs into my meals for the week, and dating all of my leftovers so that I know when I need to use them. I also found a way to keep herbs like cilantro and parsley fresh for what's now going on 6 weeks, by storing them in a mason jar with about an inch of water, covering them with a plastic bag, and trimming the leaves every week or so.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you... that I feel like I have so much to do this week both at work, to catch up, and in life! Wednesday is my birthday and I'm really hoping I can just enjoy the day and feel somewhat caught up by then!

What would you share if we were having coffee?

Weekending...DC Edition

One thing I really love about living in DC is showing out-of-town visitors around. I love taking friends and family around the Mall, to the museums, and to all of my favorite places around DC. It's also a great excuse to bring people to places that I haven't tried yet!

Over the last few weeks, The Pilot and I have hosted a few friends and have had a great time exploring DC with them!

I know that DC is a popular destination, so I've pulled together a list of some of the things we've gotten up to to inspire your next trip to DC!

The Library of Congress When my friend Steph and I went to the Library of Congress for a tour, I was so mad that I had never visited before. I run passed the Library almost every time I run and it's pretty sad that it took me nearly 4 years to get there, but I finally did!

The Library of Congress is easily the most beautiful building in DC...inside and outside. I couldn't believe how beautiful it was! We took a (free) tour which lasted about an hour, and was a fantastic way to learn about the history of the Library and fully appreciate everything we were seeing!

The East Wing of the National Gallery of Art The East Wing of the National Gallery reopened last month after being closed for renovations for three years. I had never been to the East Wing since it closed shortly after The Pilot and I moved here so I don't know how much the renovations changed the building, but I wasn't disappointed.

There are some incredible pieces in the East Wing, and we were lucky to be there for their reopening celebrations this weekend, where they were handing out free sketchbooks and supplies to draw with. I am, by no means, an artist, but I took the opportunity to sketch something I liked and it was surprisingly therapeutic. I may have to make this a frequent occurrence!

Penn Quarter/Chinatown This neighborhood is one of my favorites in DC. Home to the Verizon Center, the National Portrait Gallery (one of my favorites), the International Spy Museum, Ford's Theater, and so many other things to do, there's a lot beneath the surface of this DC neighborhood. The barbecue at Hill Country BBQ is out of this world and the cocktails across the street at Jose Andres's Oyamel are heaven. I love A Baked Joint for lunch and excellent coffee, but Compass and La Colombe are great spots for coffee too. If you're up for a good workout, Sculpt is one of my favorite studios for either spin or yoga.

The Kennedy Center Most people don't know that you don't need tickets to visit The Kennedy Center. It's open to the public and well worth a trip! The views of the Potomac are stunning, especially at sunset, and you can always catch a free performance Millennium Stage performance every day of the year.

The IMAX at the National History Museum The National History Museum is a must for just about everyone on a first trip to DC, but they usually show some pretty great films at the IMAX. I saw "National Parks Adventure" last month and it instilled in me an insane desire to visit all of the national parks in the US. If you're ever caught in DC on a rainy day, or are tired from walking the entire length of the Mall, take a break and check out an IMAX!

The Monuments at Night If you come to DC and have limited time to see the monuments. Do it at night. I promise it will be worth it. If you can sneak in at sunset, that's ideal. DC has unbelievable sunsets. I honestly think the only place I've seen better sunsets is in Sydney.

My favorite Memorial is easily the WWII Memorial. It's also where The Pilot and I got engaged
This is obviously a very condensed list, but these are just some of the things I've gotten up to lately while friends have been in town!

What are your favorite things to do in DC?
What do you show friends when they visit your city?

Currently...

Feeling... Relaxed. I'm enjoying a nice, warm cup of pumpkin-spiced coffee, reading blogs, and catching up on the news. I haven't had a morning like this in months.

Reading... I started "The High Mountains of Portugal" by Yann Martel last week and I just can't get into it. The book is divided into three sections, each being over 100 pages long. There are no chapter breaks, no line breaks...It's tough to read. I may have to put it down and start my book club reads for the month, "Year of Yes" and "The Pearl that Broke its Shell."

Thinking about... Marathon training. I'm not running the Richmond Marathon anymore. Instead, I'm running the Philadelphia Marathon the following weekend. Long story short, something came up. I have really mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I'm excited to return to the place where I ran my first marathon, though I'm not thrilled about the fact that it will likely be 20+ degrees colder than Richmond will be and that I've always thought I would go back to Philly and blow my first marathon time away, but I know that isn't going to happen. I've taken taper a bit too seriously, taking 2 days off after my 22-miler this weekend, and now I'm struggling to hit the mileage I need to this week with exceptionally tired. Yesterday, I had 8 miles plan, and I could only manage 3.

Watching... so much fall TV. I've only watched the first episodes of "Timeless" and "This is Us" but I loved both. I'm also hooked on "Good Girls Revolt" on Amazon Prime. If you're looking for a good Madmen-inspired feminist, newsroom show, I highly recommend it!

Working on... my goals for November. I feel like I have a lot of them. I need to get my multiple inboxes down to zero. Miraculously, my work inbox is in good shape, but my personal inboxes feel a little bit like my life right now!

Planning... 2017 race plans, holiday adventures, 30 before 30 things, and my cookbook challenge!

Needing... a massage. I think I want to go for a massage and acupuncture session before the marathon. I've had a lot of tightness in my right hip flexor. It was fine on my last run, but it's a lingering annoyance that I don't want creeping in at Mile 24!

Wanting... to take the month of November and start focusing more on me. I want to spend more time reading, more time with friends, more time blogging, and generally doing the things I love. It's been a weird year.

Excited... that I voted early! As a rule, I don't talk about politics on my blog, but I can't emphasize enough how important this election is. Regardless of whom you support, there is a strong likelihood that this election will be contested and the only way to combat that is to ensure that enough people show up to the polls! Aside from the candidates, I also got to vote YES to the referendum to make DC the 51st state, and that is really exciting. While I don't love that they want to call us "New Columbia," I just want us to have Congressional representation.

Coffee Date: August Edition

It has been an exhausting month.

We moved into our new apartment on July 30th. I didn't take any time off from work and getting settled in was pretty tough. My mom came down the following weekend to help us get settled in, and, while she was a huge help and our apartment is starting to look great, we still have 5 boxes that are unpacked and it still takes me 30 minutes to piece together an outfit in the morning.

I left for Seattle on August 10th and, because of major storms and cancellations, ended up leaving my Air B&B in Vancouver at 5am Sunday, missing 3 flights, flying to Houston, missing a flight, flying to Dallas, booking a hotel room for 4 hours, and waking up Monday morning to fly back to DC on a 6am flight. I landed, headed home to take a shower and hopped in an uber to the office just in time for a 12:00 meeting.

Last week was a quick week and on Friday afternoon, Peyton and I were in the car driving up to NJ for the weekend. I originally wasn't planning to leave until Saturday afternoon but my mom promised to take me to the beach on Saturday, and that was enticing enough. Saturday's Beach Day was glorious. It had been ages since my last trip and it was exactly what I needed.

Sunday, we went to our nephew's Christening and, after all of our flight options for the night got canceled, we hopped in the car and got back to DC just before midnight.

Today is supposed to be my first day of marathon training. I wanted to take the week after Sea Wheeze off to recover, especially since. I had some post-run knee pain, and I did but ever since I came back from the West Coast, I haven't been able to pull myself out of bed before 8am. This morning is beautiful in DC. Cool, breezy...perfect for running. No matter what, I need to get in a run today. It will have to be after work, but it'll happen.

This week isn't going to slow down any either. I'm heading out to Raleigh for work, coming back to DC, and then going to a wedding in Connecticut  this weekend.

I can't wait for Labor Day weekend, when I can finally take some time to relax...lounge poolside, maybe visit a museum or two, go for a hike, who knows? As long as it's local, because, after months of trying to figure out where to go, The Pilot have finally planned our anniversary trip and it's going to be incredible!

But I have to finish telling you about Paris before I tell you where we're going!

My goal for this week (aside from kicking off marathon training) is to finish all of my Paris posts and actually get back into a rhythm with my blog because I miss it!

How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun?
Don't forget, the Beyond Bloggers Book Club link up is this Friday!

You can link up about anything you've been reading lately, but our pick for this month is "Salt to Sea" by Ruta Sepetys. You can vote on next month's pick in our poll here!

Coffee Date: Summer Edition

I've been MIA since I came back from Paris and wanted to put up a post and fill you all in on what's been going on!

If we were having coffee I would be drinking mine iced because the heat in DC is oppressive today!

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I've been dragging out my jet lag since we got back from Paris, and it is awesome. I don't love that I'm in bed by 8:45 every night but I love that I'm up by 6 every morning and getting in plenty of time to read, run, eat breakfast, and enjoy my mornings. It has made a world of difference in my summer!

I would tell you that Sea Wheeze training is going really well! Despite oppressive heat and humidity, I still managed to run my 10 mile long run this weekend in under 10 minute miles. It wasn't the 9:30 pace that I wanted but given the circumstances, I'll take it. It's much better than the 12+ I was averaging last summer AND I ran my fastest mile in a LONG time this morning in 8:19. I'm really happy with how my training is going and I think this race is going to segway really nicely into training for Richmond.

I would tell you that The Pilot and I are moving this weekend! We're packing up our tiny Capitol Hill basement apartment for a bigger apartment with a lot more light in a different part of DC. I'm really sad to leave Capitol Hill but I'm excited for our new place and our new neighborhood!

I would tell you that while I'm excited to move, I'm not sure when we'll actually get to spend time in our new apartment! Between Sea Wheeze, a wedding, and a Christening next month, our weekends are pretty booked up for the month of August...and the fall isn't looking much better!

I would also tell you that today marks three years since The Pilot and I got engaged and things have been pretty great ever since.

I'm hoping to get my Paris posts up this week but my apartment is full of boxes and we still have a lot of packing to do!

What's going on in your world? What would you tell me over a coffee date?

Life Lately

Hello! I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend! I didn't manage to get more than one post up last week (oops) but it's actually for good reason! Instead of being inundated with work (I mean, I was but I'm finally starting to balance work and life a lot better!), I've been taking time for myself, spending a lot of time outside and with friends.

I've also kicked off what I can already tell will be an amazing summer, so let's back up to last weekend and I'll fill you in!

My little sister, Sammi flew in from Dallas late last Thursday night and we had an amazing weekend! She had only been to DC for our wedding so I took the weekend to show her all over the city!

Our first stop on Friday morning was a trip to Ted's Bulletin for breakfast and their homemade pop tarts! Next, we went to the National Zoo to pay a visit to Bei Bei, the baby panda born last year! Oh my goodness! Bei Bei and his mom were out playing and we watched them for almost an hour! It was so sweet! I love the National Zoo because the animals are always so active!

While we were at the zoo, it started pouring! We hopped on the metro and made our way to the Mall to stop at the Natural History Museum. They have a new exhibit with National Geographic on photographs of nature and it was incredible!

We left the museum and headed home to walk Peyton before making our way back to Eastern Market for Happy hour at Ambar. Ambar is easily my favorite restaurant in DC. They have an incredible brunch, amazing Happy Hour, and Balkan food that makes me feel like I'm in Bosnia again. We ate to our heart's content before making our way to the H Street Country Club for some fun and then called it a night.

Saturday, we went to brunch at Old Ebbitt, had some fun at the Renwick Gallery, spent the day shopping in Georgetown, paid a visit to Mr. Lincoln, and went home and devoured 2 pints of ice cream.

Sammi left on Sunday morning with a promise to come back soon! I love that she fell in love with DC and can't wait for her to come back!

This past week was the calm before the storm of 6 deadlines at work this week but I celebrated Negroni Week with my friend Alicia, went on a lot of long walks, and spent 2 glorious days working from my backyard with Peyton at my feet soaking up the sun.

The Pilot left on Thursday for a 4-day trip with a DC overnight on Friday which meant that he would be home. Best part? My big sister, Zuzy called me on Thursday to say she was flying in for a short weekend for work and asked if I had plans Friday night. The Pilot landed at 2 and I finished up work and we biked downtown to pick up my sis. We made a stop for appetizers and drinks at Oyamel, walked all the way down to the Jefferson Memorial along the most beautiful DC sunset I've ever seen, and had a night cap at Old Ebbitt before taking her back to her hotel and biking back home.

Sunday morning we were up bright and early to take Peyton to her dog sitter. The Pilot had to resume his trip with a flight to Charlotte which I decided to tag along for! He had a Des Moines overnight on Saturday and when he got his schedule, I reached out to some friends in Des Moines to see if they were in town. We landed in Charlotte, had a 2-hour layover  (I could've taken a later flight but I really wanted to be on his flight!) and then he took off to Raleigh and I headed to Des Moines!

My friend Laura picked me up from the airport and took me to her house where I helped her get ready for her little one's 1st birthday! I spent the afternoon with them and The Pilot got there around 9. We stayed out catching up with our friends until around midnight and then headed back to our hotel for some shuteye.

Sunday morning, we met our friends for breakfast and then went to a local coffee shop to meet up with a DC friend of ours who's interning in Des Moines for the summer! Our flights were supposed to take off around 4 and they were delayed by a few hours so The Pilot and I headed out for a 3.5 mile run around the airport. It was about 100 degrees but I actually felt pretty good! It wasn't the long run I was supposed to get in but at least I still got some miles in...especially since I didn't think I'd get any!

Our flights kept getting delayed and delayed and delayed. One point, I realized that my connecting flight wasn't going to get me to DC on time so I changed course and made my way to Chicago. The Pilot was headed there too but I jumped on a different flight in hopes of catching a 10pm flight to DC.

After realizing that my chances of getting on that flight were slim, I made way over to the Pilot's last flight of the weekend and headed to Dayton, OH where we spent the night. 3 very short hours and 45 even shorter minutes after checking into the hotel, we were up bright and early to make our way home to DC.

I'm going to be a zombie the week but it was so worth it! I hadn't been to Des Moines since my friends got married and it was great to meet their little ones and meet up with our friend from DC. I definitely got a glimpse of the Pilot's life this week with 5 flights in 48 hours and a 25 hour overnight but it was well worth it to spend time with friends and not have to talk to my husband on the phone for once! Plus, going on another overnight with him was on my 30 Before 30 list! I hadn't done this since before we moved to DC!

So that's what's been going on with me lately.
What's going on in your world? What's the most whirlwind weekend you've ever had?
Do you have a record number of flights taken in a minimal amount of time?

Weekending...Cherry Blossom Style

Lately, I've been experiencing a lot of nostalgia for DC. It sounds weird to say, because we're still here and don't plan on leaving soon, but I love DC. It's taken me a long time to find a place I felt comfortable calling home and DC is definitely it. This city takes my breath away and there is no time like during the Cherry Blossom Festival to prove why.

My mom came to town this weekend and The Pilot and I loved showing her around the Cherry Blossoms and taking her to some of our favorite neighborhoods while trying out some new restaurants. Usually, when my mom comes to DC, I like taking her to my favorite places, but this weekend, we tried a ton of new things and it just made me fall in love with the city even more.

Friday night, I met up with two of my book club friends to see the Synetic Theater's silent production of "Romeo & Juliet." Synetic has been doing silent renditions of Shakespeare plays for years and this was my second play by them. They do a phenomenal job and I highly recommend a trip to Synetic for anyone who loves theater and is coming to DC! Trust me, I doubted the idea of silent Shakespeare too; it's well worth it!

I woke up on Saturday morning and headed for a run around the Mall, where I ran into Courtney and some friends! My mom came in later that morning and The Pilot and I took her to our favorite breakfast spot on the Hill, The Pretzel Bakery, for a quick bite to eat before hopping on the Metro and heading to the Mall to brave the masses of tourists and see the cherry blossoms!

For the last week, I've read a dozen articles about how to see the cherry blossoms without the crowds. Let me tell you something. If you want to see the Cherry Blossoms, you have to brave the crowds. Cherry Blossoms are just pretty trees. It's seeing them on the National Mall in front of the monuments that make the Cherry Blossom Festival so famous. It's crowded, yes, but it is 100% worth it.

We walked the Tidal Basin and then made our way down to Hain's Point before heading back to the Mall and on to City Center for a round of beers at City Tap House (highly recommend for drinks and snacks but not for brunch!).

I made dinner reservations at DBGB, a French-inspired restaurant in City Center which was wonderful! My mom and I shared oysters as an appetizer and we all had fantastic entrees. I was very impressed with the food and wine selection! We opted to skip dessert at DBGB and instead, headed around the corner to Momofuku's Milk Bar which recently opened in DC. I feel like Milk has way more hype in DC than it ever did in New York. The Pilot had the famed "cereal milk" soft serve (which I tasted and thought it tasted like rotted milk), I had crack pie (which is just gooey butter cake), and my mom had Dulce De Leche cake balls (which were just ok). Honestly, I lived around the corner from Milk in New York and went there once after a heavy night of drinking. I thought it was the best thing in the world. My sober, almost 30-year-old-self was not impressed.

After a day of walking all over the Mall and eating incredibly filling foods, we were ready to call it a night!
Sunday morning, we went to St. Patrick's downtown for Easter Sunday Mass. St. Patrick's is my go-to-church for Lent because it's right downtown and their Mass times are convenient! After Mass, we headed to U Street for dinner at Kapnos, a Greek restaurant (by Top Chef Mike Isabella) that I've been wanting to try for awhile. Unsurprisingly, the food was incredible. We shared a tzatziki spread, some spanakopita (my favorite!) and baklava for dessert on top of very strong coffee and equally strong mimosas!

After brunch, we walked off all of our food at Meridian Hill Park at down Embassy Row before hopping on the Metro and heading home. We picked up Peyton and then drove down to the National Arboretum! I hadn't been to the Arboretum yet and honestly thought it was tiny! Turns out, there are 9 miles of running and cycling trails through the grounds which I will definitely be hitting up soon! There wasn't too much in season at the Arboretum and it was a pretty cloudy day but the magnolia trees were absolutely stunning!

Peyton loved roaming around and smelling all of the smells and sampling all of the different grasses available. We dropped her off at home and then went to Driftwood Kitchen on H Street for dinner. Driftwood Kitchen was another new-to-me restaurant and I immediately became a fan because they have Sunday Happy Hour! The food was fantastic (truffle mac and cheese anyone?) and we shared beignets and a cardamom creme brulee which I will definitely be back for!

This weekend was fabulous! I loved trying new restaurants and showing my mom around some of my favorite areas of DC! I loved seeing the Cherry Blossoms and falling in love with this city all over again! I love that The Pilot was home and that we go to let Peyton run around what may have been largest open space she's ever been to. I've been so busy lately and so tired and it was so wonderful to have a jam packed weekend with my favorite people doing some pretty awesome things in a pretty wonderful place!
How was your weekend?
Have you ever seen DC's Cherry Blossoms?
What's your favorite thing about where you live?

New Year's Weekend Adventures

Hi there friends!

Here we go, first Monday of the New Year. Is it just me or did this Monday come way too quickly?

I had a really great weekend. I took Thursday off from work which was a wonderful idea. I did some stuff around the house, worked on my new blog design and binge watched a new TV show.

For New Year's Eve, I went out with one of my friends from Junior League. We went to a Mexican restaurant that was cheap, delicious and not crowded. Perfect NYE night in my opinion!

Peyton woke me up bright and early on New Year's morning which gave me perfect time to eat breakfast and relax before heading to the Fresh Start 5k. I met up with Courtney at the race and we ran nice and easy together before heading to Ted's Bulletin for brunch. It was 10:30 in the morning but we both ordered grilled cheese and tomato soup and it was pefect!

After brunch, I headed back to my apartment to warm up wish some tea and a nap before meeting up with a friend for Happy Hour at Old Ebbitt. Old Ebbitt is where The Pilot and I got married and is one of my favorite restaurants in DC. Their Happy Hour is a seafood lovers' paradise and my friend and I devoured their half priced oysters and clams!

Saturday morning, I kicked off the day with a nice, easy at home yoga workout before heading to the grocery store and spending the day meal prepping for the week. I made a pit stop at Market Lunch for their famous Blueberry Buckwheat pancakes, which were just as amazing as they sound! I almost always do meal prep on Sundays, but it was nice to get it out of the way on Sunday! I posted this week's meal plan yesterday if you want to check it out! I pulled together some great recipes from other bloggers for that post!

{Left: Surf and Turf - the Turf and Right: Sweet Potato Noodles with Cashew Cream Sauce}
With meal planning behind me, I had an amazing Sunday! I did another at-home yoga workout before heading to the Renwick Gallery to check out their latest exhibit. It was really amazing! The Pilot and I wandered up to 14th Street afterward and had brunch at Draft Table. We strolled up and down 14th Street before heading home, hanging out with our landlords, and then making dinner.

So Long 2015!

Since I started this blog in 2010, I've committed to goals at the start of every year and loved seeing my progress at the end of each year.

I didn't do that last year.

Instead, I said, "I don't want to be bound by a to-do list for the year. I want to be adventurous and spontaneous and I want to learn things and see things and do things."

I made a list of some things that I wanted to work on but didn't really care if I did. Those things included yoga, making more food at home, rather than buying pre-packaged stuff, shopping locally at my local farmers' market, reading more non-fiction, saving money, and exploring more of DC,

I started off the year doing a lot of yoga...and that took a backseat. I've definitely been better at doing yoga at home this year thanks to Yoga with Adriene, but I don't think I get as much out of yoga in my living room (with the dog running around me and the oven preheating for dinner) as I do in a studio.

I definitely tried my hand in some Adventures in Homemade - homemade bread, homemade tomato sauce, pasteis de nata (from Portugal), but I'd like to get better at that, and actually blog about those adventures.

I think I shopped at the Farmers' Market once.

I failed miserably at exploring more of DC. We moved into a new neighborhood and I love it so much, I hardly ever left. I definitely read way more non-fiction than usual and I saved a ton of money.

I definitely had some awesome experiences in 2015. I was finally able to race uninjured and did so at DC Rock 'n' Roll, Cherry Blossom, and finally, Chicago. I traveled a lot.

  • I celebrated my sister's 40th birthday at the Sundance Film Festival.
  • The Pilot and I visited my sister in San Francisco.
  • My mom and I went to Lisbon together, and The Pilot joined.
  • We celebrated our 1st anniversary in Hawaii and then took off on an impromptu trip to Dubai six weeks later.
  • I spent a few days in St. Louis for work, and fell in love with the city.

This year definitely brought some awesome memories and adventures, but at the same time, it was really hard.

The Pilot and I spent more time apart than we ever have. He started the year away in training for a new job for 3 months...and then left again for training with another airline at the beginning of December. He left right after Peyton's surgery and it was tough taking care of her by myself. Peyton's cancer diagnosis in itself was a tough blow but I'm so grateful that we were able to act quickly with the support of some really generous family and friends.

I don't think I was my best self in 2015. I think I was selfish in a lot of regards, but at the same time, I didn't really do anything for myself. I half-assed my way through marathon training, almost reinjuring myself in the process. I spent more time on my couch this year than ever before, I turned down a lot of plans and invitations and secluded myself. I'm not even really sure why.

I'll be 29 in 2016 and lately, I've been thinking a lot about where I want to be at 30. I want to be more committed this year...to everything...to running, to blogging, to my family, to traveling...everything. I want to be my best self at 29 and that means saying "Yes" a lot more, and being the adventurous, spontaneous self that has always made my happiest. I'll be back later this week with how I plan to make that happen!

So, let's raise a glass to 2015...and another one to 2016!
How did your year shape up?

Three Years in DC

Three years ago, The Pilot and I ended our long distance relationship and moved to DC. We had already fallen in love with this city but now, it was home, and more importantly, it was our home.

We spent those first six months exploring every inch of this city we could. We went to all of the museums, we tried restaurants, we went on long walks and longer runs.

I've had offices in Georgetown, McPherson Square and Penn Quarter. I've fallen in love with the restaurants on 14th Street, the bars on U Street, weekend mornings in Eastern Market, and the green spaces of Lincoln and Meridian Hill Parks.

We got engaged on the National Mall. We never even thought about not getting married in DC. We got married across the street from the White House.

DC is home. Everything about this city just feels right. The last three years have been incredible. I haven't spent nearly as much time this year exploring the city as I used to (I didn't do much of anything in 2015 to be honest) and that will definitely change in 2016. This is an amazing city and I plan to keep exploring as much of it as I can.

I don't know how long The Pilot and I will live in DC. We aren't planning on leaving anytime soon, but I plan to keep exploring as much of our home as possible while we are here.

What's the one place you've lived that will always feel like home?
Have you been to DC? What are your favorite things about the nation's capital?
